Who we are

Who Are We?

AmaAko is a collection of individuals with strong ties to Myanmar who come from all across the world. Every one of us has friends or colleagues who are currently enduring great danger and hardship as a result of the military coup. That’s why, two weeks after the coup, we came together to create an organisation to provide both material and moral support to the people of Myanmar, especially its young.

In a little over two months the people of Myanmar have lost everything: their democracy, their rights, their freedom to express themselves or protest safely, and – in more than 700 cases – their lives. Children are being shot in their homes, and people who oppose the military coup tortured in prisons. The country has been thrown back 30 years in time.

Our goal is to provide humanitarian aid through essential supplies such as food, water and medical aid, while also getting messages of support through to young people despite Internet suppression. Our Messages4Myanmar platform has been designed to recognise the Internet speed of the user, and – if they are on a low bandwidth – provide text only messages which can still be read. We make sure every message and every donation get through.

Why are we called AmaAko? Because these words mean sister and brother in Burmese, and these are the names by which our friends in Myanmar often addressed us. It is a declaration of our kinship with the people of Myanmar and a pledge of support in this hour of need.

Our logo uses the Pyit Taing Htaung traditional egg shaped-dolls, which are weighted so that they will bounce back when knocked over. Pyit (to throw) taing (each time) htaung (upright)“when you throw it, each time it stands” These dolls stand for resilience, perseverance, and the ability to pick oneself up and to never give up – an important value of Myanmar culture.

Our team is an all-volunteers team of communication and NGO professionals who have lived or worked in Myanmar for years, dedicating their free time for this campaign. Our team is not allied to any political faction.

We are 8 professionals (4 akos and 4 amas) currently based in different parts of the world and who came together for the sole purpose of supporting our friends and colleagues in Myanmar. While we will remain anonymous for the protection of those we care about on the ground, we would like you to know more about us. Here is a bit of info about each of our members.
